In March 2015 BF Adventure received funding from Children in Need, it has made an incredible difference to the lives of disadvantaged and disabled young people right here in Cornwall. The grant was for the delivery and development of BF Adventures Learning Difficulty and Disability (LDD) provision over two years. Here is a summary of how Children in Need has helped our young people.
In total so far the Children in Need funding has enabled us to provide:
- 32 x 1:1 sessions
- 15 x Family Days
- 40 x Holiday Adventure Days
During the programme BF Adventure has worked with a total of 46 young people with additional support needs. Some of these young people were also experiencing multiple disadvantages including learning disabilities, physical disabilities, attachment disorder, ill mental health, poverty, drug and alcohol abuse within the family, were in care or on child protection plans.
The sessions were bespoke to the needs of the young people who attended either 1:1 sessions, integrated holiday activity days or family activity days. The aim of the programme was to provide funded activity days. Young people could have fun as well as working on building interpersonal relationships, their emotional resilience and confidence. The sessions were incredibly successful and the young people had the opportunity to make choices, challenge themselves, learn new skills, work with others and gain new experiences. 22 young people attended more than one session and 21 of these showed improvements in the outcomes measured.
Here is a selection of feedback comments from young people:
“I liked doing something I had never done before and finding out it was really great (even though I was scared at first). Jo made it a really great day and I really want to come back”
“I had lots of fun”
“Thank you so much for allowing us to have a fabulous family day together. We’ve had so much fun!”
“Lyndsay and John were fantastic leaders. Both had excellent skills with all ages and abilities. Well able to adapt activities to suit the needs of all involved. Great opportunity to try new activities and learn new skills. Fantastic day.”
“I feel happy, love day all activities”
We have also been able to run specific staff training to meet the needs of the young people, coordinate the provision, and support our volunteer team (who have helped out with the programme) and develop links with other organisations, allowing us to develop ongoing provision for young people.
Jeni Stephens LDD Coordinator says: “We could not reach out to the young people in Cornwall without the support of BBC Children in Need. This grant has changed the lives of so many young people and their families, giving them the support they need. We have been oversubscribed for the funding this year and places are filling fast for 2016. We are continually seeking funding to improve the lives of more young people with higher support needs in Cornwall, please support Children in Need and BF Adventure”
BBC Children in Need funding relies on the energy and commitment of thousands of fundraisers and supporters across the UK who donate their time and money to support the Appeal. Whether its cake sales, wearing pyjamas to school or having a song and dance, every penny of the money raised goes towards supporting projects across the UK.
