Case Studies

“When I started coming to BF I was nervous but now being at BF makes me feel happy.” – Claire

Claire’s Story: overcoming anxiety

When Claire started with us, her anxiety was so severe that interacting with others was distressing. Through  trauma-informed approaches, she now participates in group activities, inviting peers to join. Claire has made real progress in communication, expressing her needs safely. She has built trusted relationships with her instructors and has faced her fears through the Via Ferrata, abseiling and paddleboarding. She’s now sought out by her peers and positively influences others.

“I love the freedom being in the water gives me. BF is like a family to me” – Ollie

Ollie’s Story: building trust

When Ollie was referred to us he lacked self-esteem, struggled to manage emotions and had recently self-harmed. He was subject to a Child Protection Plan and had experienced a great deal of instability at home. We soon realised that Ollie loved the water so swimming, quarrysteering and kayaking became an important part of his programme. Through this he was able to build a sense of achievement, feeling more positive about his abilities. He built trusting relationships with several staff.

“I’m more confident than I think I am. I  felt proud that I’d gone on the zip wire as I felt really scared and then found I loved it.” – Emily

Emily’s Story: building confidence

Emily was referred to us having been out of school for 8 months. She was experiencing high anxiety levels and often self-harmed. She was refusing to attend school, saying she’d kill herself if she had to go back. She’d experienced much trauma with the death of a close friend, had a turbulent home life and was experiencing stress-induced alopecia. She joined our Head Out Mental Wellbeing programme and as her confidence grew, she became more able to recognise her achievements. She also made a friend who she maintained contact with and after the programme, returned to school full time.

How we measure our impacts

I can statements

We track progress in five key areas: development of positive relationships, improved communication skills, increased personal wellbeing, increased confidence and an improved sense of empowerment.

We do this by asking the young people how well they feel they can do certain things by scoring a series of ‘I Can’ statements – e.g. ‘I can see when a relationship is healthy.’

These quantitative insights into the progress of those we support are crucial in making sure we’re on the right track.

To learn more about how we measure progress, check out our discussions and full list of ‘I Can’ statements which we work through with young people throughout their programme.
