Carly, one of our fantastic instructors will be sailing away this summer to face plastic pollution head on – in the arctic circle. The facts on microplastics are getting increasingly concerning; there are more microplastics in the ocean than stars in the milky way, plastic has been found in the stomachs of 90% of sea birds, and now even found in the flesh of fish that we eat.
The expedition will last just over 2 weeks this July, starting from Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. It aims to clean arctic beaches, conduct marine litter surveys and collect samples for various scientific projects that are happening all over the world. Carly hopes that by cleaning up the plastic that is currently there and helping research the effects of plastic on our world, that people will be encouraged to reduce their plastic use and large companies will reduce the amount of plastic in their packaging.
