The Story of the Cabins…
BF Adventure was in desperate need of covered weather proof accommodation that could be used throughout the year. This would provide more young people in Cornwall the opportunity to experience outdoor adventure in a warm, safe environment and also help the charity become more sustainable. Residential trips provide an invaluable life experience for young people, children and those with additional needs and providing that facility all year round would help many local community groups and schools.
Two years ago the idea of a new Bunkhouse was looked into. This would be purpose built at the top of the site to sleep approximately 30 young people. The cost of the build came to circa £500,000… Unfortunately BF Adventure didn’t have the funding to support the new build so it was put on hold.
Less than a year ago an opportunity arose. Ward Williams and Raymond Brown Construction Ltd., based at Pendennis Shipyard Ltd. offered their site offices that were no longer needed. There was great excitement at BF Adventure but the next problem was how do they get the offices to the site? To navigate the lanes with loads of up to 10ft wide was an ‘epic’ event!! Thanks to the tremendous support and logistics of RNAS Culdrose, Peter Stone & Sons and MacSalvors the offices made it to BF Adventure and the enormity of the task began. Six offices were on site, no electricity, some of them leaking and where do we put them?
A plea was put out and a huge response from the local community yet again replied. BF Adventure would like to say a huge thank you to their key funders The Trustees of Gwellheans, Paul Harman, Mary Vyvyan, Geoff Tate and Anthea Francis. The Tanner Trust, Rotary Clubs Helston and the Lizard, Cober Valley, Mounts Bay, Isles of Scilly, Helston and Truro Boscowan. A huge thank you also goes to the support from BF Adventure ex Chair of Trustees Robert Sturland.
The funding and support went to complete:
- Cabins & Re-roofing/Decking
- Water (Aqua Source)
- Building supplies (Jewson)
- Plant hire
- Gripsure (donated 3km non-slip decking)
Additional volunteers included:
- Pendennis Apprentices (painting)
- BF Adventure Volunteers Team and Chair of Trustees Bob Padbury
The official opening of the Camping cabins was on 4th May 2016 by Paul Harman and Robert Sturland. The camping cabins are not fully complete BUT have already been slept in by Carefree and Helston Brownies. This is a massive enhancement to BF Adventures offering and will allow an increase in use throughout the year by more Cornish young people.
